Tourists visiting and toasting Sir Ernest Shackleton at his grave in the whaler's cemetery in Grytviken. Shackleton died of a heart attack in the harbor in 1922. The grantie headstone was raised in 1928. C.A. Larsen, a Norwegian whaler, set up the Grytviken Whaling Station in 1904 to capitalize on the vast whale populations in the Southern Ocean. The station closed in 1965 and whales have yet to make a recovery. The station has been preserved as an open air museum.
