Fur seals at the whaling station at Stromness Bay. Sir Ernest Shackleton made an epic crossing of South Georgia Island from King Haakon Bay on the west coast to this whaling station on the east. Shackleton and two men who had sailed in an open boat to South Georgia from Elephant Island on the Antarctic Peninsula made the crossing in 36 hours. Today the last leg between Fortuna Bay and the remains of the whaling station at Stromness Bay is a popular day hike.
